I have recently been asked if I can set sv_strictauth to 0 on the Lazery Attack servers. I have done a bit of research and got a few people who I know have valid q3 keys to connect to the servers and check that they have no problems. The result of all of this is that I can find no reason to disable the checking of valid cd-keys. Everybody that I know has a valid key has been able to connect with no problems.
There are a couple of reasons why you may be having problems connecting when sv_strictauth is set to 1:
If the server you are playing on and the auth server don't see you as the
same IP (for instance you are trying to play on a public internet server
that's on your LAN, and your internet access is using NAT), then it won't
work. It used to work in 1.31, and it doesn't in 1.32. PunkBuster requires
reliable auth of the players. What you can do to fix this?
- run a server with sv_strictauth 0 and you'll be able to join your
server. This will be the same behaviour as 1.31
- connect to a server on the internet before you connect to your local
server (this will trigger your IP into the cache of the auth server for
15mn and let you in to your local server).
- setup two NATs, one for your client one for your server and make sure
your server and Id's auth see the same IP. (this one ain't for network
setup newbies)
notice that this all relates to you running a local server that you can connect to via LAN and Internet.
Secondly your CD-Key is either invalid as far as ID is concerned, or your cd-key is on ID's ban list.
This can occur if you use a keygen to get your Q3 cd-key, these keygen's create cd-keys that are valid as far as the checking in Q3 is concerned, but they are keys that are not valid as far as ID is concerned because they have never generated them. Your cd-key could also have been compromised, if you have handed you key out to mates so they could play that would cause this to happen. ID have been banning keys that are being used by multiple clients at the same time and your key has probably been banned (you shouldn't have handed it out in the first place).
There is a very very slim chance that a keygen may have created a cd-key that is identical to your own cd-key, this would also cause you be denied access to q3 servers, if this has happened to you I would suggest getting in touch with Activision and seeing what they can do about it, I would stress that everybody I have got to test logging onto the Lazery Attack servers who I know has a valid cd-key has had no problems at all, and they have not seen the cd-key unknown to auth message on any other servers so this problem is unlikely to occur if you are using a legit key that has not been compromised.
The result of all of this is that sv_strictauth will be set to 1 on the Lazery Attack servers for quake 3. The Enemy Territory public server currently has sv_strictauth 0 as t is free and it doesn't really matter if your key is valid or not.
